EU Asks Uganda Govt To Drop Charges Against Bobi Wine

The European Union (EU) Parliament has called on the Ugandan government to drop charges against Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

The European Parliament on Thursday resolved and urged Ugandan authorities to “stop what appear to be trumped-up charges against Bobi Win and to stop the crackdown against opposition politicians and supporters”.

Bobi Wine was arrested alongside other 32 people in the northern town of Arua on August 13th on the eve of Arua Municipality by-election.

He was arrested and reportedly tortured. He was charged with treason after allegedly leading a group of people to pelt stones at President Museveni’s presidential motorcade.

The 36-year-old lawmaker was later granted bail and was flown to the US to seek medical treatment.

EU also called for immediate, impartial and effective” investigations into the killing of Bobi Wine’s driver Yasin Kawuma, torture and use of excessive force against opposition supporters.

Wine’s arrest caused an international outcry and triggered demonstrations in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, after appearing in court using crutches for support.

EU’s remarks come at a time when President Museveni isn’t happy with interference of foreign countries into the politics and affairs of other countries.

Addressing the nation over the weekend, Museveni said: “It is important that external players refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.

If there’s any problem in Uganda, I surely will handle it better than the outsider.”
