Budo Girl Who Perished Saving Friends Given Highest Buganda Honor

Yvonne Namaganda, one of the pupils who perished in the Buddo Junior School fire in 2008 is among seven people Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has awarded Buganda Kingdom’s highest honour.

Other recipients of the Order of the Shield and Spears or Ekitiibwa ky’Amafumu n’Engabo include Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere, the first Katikkiro of Buganda after the restoration of kingdoms in 1993. It was Ssemwogerere who steered the institution at a difficult time when kingdoms struggled to fit in their changed roles as non-political entities.

Also on the list are Godfrey Kaaya Kavuma, the former CBS radio Board Director, Prince Daniel Steven Kimbugwe, the late John Ssebaana Kizito, Jen Sebiri Mulwana, and late Rosalia Kyoteka.

This was during the official opening of the 25th Buganda Kingdom at Bulange Mengo this afternoon.

According to Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, the Shield and Spears award is the highest honour in the Kingdom given for excellent service.

The practice was initiated by Kabaka Daudi Chwa when he awarded Sir Apollo Kaggwa, Serwano Kulubya and Martin Luther Nsibirwa with the honour.

Kaggwa and Nsibirwa both served as Buganda premiers with the former witnessing the signing of the Buganda Agreement of 1900. He was one of the three regents of Kabaka Chwa who succeeded his father at the age of three.
